Name

The Wakeman Huia is made from beautiful White Ash MDF décor board that gives it an exquisite timber grain appearance at a more affordable price than solid timber.  Finished with a matte black painted trim and a raised lid, the Wakeman Huia is elegant and classic, yet unique and a little more modern.

In Māori culture, the Huia bird holds a sacred place, symbolising mana and chiefly status. Though the Huia has been lost to time, its spirit lives on in our Huia casket. Honour your loved one with the same reverence once reserved for high chiefs. The casket’s design echoes the Huia’s distinctive black and white tail feathers – the Mareko – worn by leaders. Just as Huia feathers were treasured in ornate Waka Huia chests, this casket becomes a final, precious Waka Huia for your loved one. Wrap them in the mana of Aotearoa’s most sacred bird. It’s more than a farewell; it’s a celebration of a life lived with distinction and a connection to our land’s rich heritage.

6’1″ x 22″ x13″ is our standard size for this range. Please contact us if you would like other sizes.

More about MDF ...

There is a lot of bad press around MDF (Medium Density Fibre Board), however the MDF used in caskets is biodegradable and does not contaminate the soil.  It is made by bonding wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive.

It is a very versatile product and produces a consistent finish.

The funeral industry use MDF with a timber foil finish.  When polished, it produces a beautiful natural timber look.  Most traditional caskets used by New Zealanders are glossed MDF.
